OUR STORY

We are a small family of three, each tech-geeks in their own way but each with our own deep interests. Dad thinks about designing innovative software experiences all day, Mom thinks about driving change in education for neurodivergent students with the help of technology, and The Boy... well right now, he thinks about binary, coding, and Graham's Number most of the day but that will likely change in a few weeks as it usually does when he's gone deep enough to satisfy his curiosity.

How we got here is a bit of a story.... See, Mom was raised in the south but ran away to California after college to pursue her career aspirations in technology. She eventually found Dad who proceeded to drag her all the way back to the south (some might say kicking-and-screaming the whole way) so that they could design and build their dream modernist home near her family. The glass box they created provides an ideal setting where they (attempt to) harmoniously blend their eco-friendly nature loving lifestyle and tech-forward interests in a highly functional dwelling that serves as the place where they all three live, work, and school from home each day.

It was our parenting journey that changed us in ways we hadn't anticipated. When our son was born.... actually when we were 20 weeks pregnant and Mom went onto forced bedrest.... we realized a shift was coming. Even in the womb, our son made it clear that he was on his own timeline and that he had his own approach to life. Through observing his experience as a neurodivergent individual, we've come to realize that the world isn't a great place for people like him. We've also come to realize just how much of his journey was similar to our own. We believe in creating environments within which we can all thrive, providng him with opportunities to learn and grow in a way that feels safe to his nervous system (spoiler: we school from home!), and providng ample time for us each to exist in our areas of interest as the hours in flow bring peace to our souls.

We began to consider a service dog during the pandemic when our son's world became too small. As parents, we felt we'd tried it all and yet we were still not getting traction. As we engaged in the service dog world, we had the opportunity to work with several service dogs and immediately saw the shift in our son when in the presence of a dog that could support him. Although we had some pitfalls along our way, we became dedicated to the mission of getting a service dog to support him in whatever way the road took us. We wholeheartedly believed that a service dog would help to open his world beyond our home and provide accommodations allowing him to enjoy the activities of his dreams.

So, here we are... a family that lives, works, and schools from home. And, now, trains a service dog too. What could go wrong?
